Intermediate
Project Management, Execution and Control
(Simulation)
Learn to deal
with the complexities of projects within a multiple priority results-driven
environment.
In this five
day workshop you will experience, dissect and learn to
create the foundation of a successful project climate, recognize
the warning signs and symptoms of project teams that need attention
as well as learn to resolve many of the situations that impact projects.
Project environments
are complex environments. In our exploration of the process of working
in projects, we experience team dynamics, complacency, conflict,
getting and keeping support for your project, and dealing with changes
all while attempting to produce results and respecting the triple-constraint
that guides good Project Management.
Pivotal Plans
Experience planning as a natural evolution of what is needed
to execute, monitor and control a project. We use the simulation
to help us in our learning.
- Outline essential
versus discretionary plans
- Implement
Modular Project Conception
- Develop a
work breakdown structure, schedule, network, budget and allocate
resources for your project
- Integrate
Quality and Risk Management into your project design
- Define the
need and the method for tracking and controlling
Project Quality
Management
Both the management of the project and the 'fitness of use'
of the products and services of the project are considered in project
quality.
- Check the
quality policy
- Identify
standards relevant to the project
- Determine
compliance with quality standards
- Eliminate
causes of unsatisfactory quality
- Document
acceptance
- Capture lessons
learned
Structuring
Your Project Team
Project team composition is rarely strategic. No matter who
is on your team, there are things that can be done to make it more
likely to create a performance team. If you are in the position
of choosing who will be on your team, there are some key considerations.
- Comprehend
the cycles of team development and learn to move your team towards
performance more quickly
- Put into
place the foundations for effective project teams
- Experience
the most nefarious dynamic and learn to correct it
- Increase
your performance potential by recognizing individual style contribution
Team Decision
Making
Making the appropriate decisions at the appropriate level is
easier said than done.
- Delve into
group decision making: when and how it is appropriate
- Use control
techniques to keep group decision making productive and to keep
it from degenerating into anarchy and chaos
Risk Management
The principles that provide an effective approach to managing
risk are covered here.
- Implications
of Continuous Risk Management and the big picture
- Apply the
risk framework step by step
- Familiarize
yourself with the tools and techniques appropriate to each of
the 5 steps
- Examine the
most likely project risks
- Recognize
which risks warrant your attention
- Respond to
critical project problems
- Distinguish
which risk tracking tools are best matched to different degrees
of risk
- Investigate
the methods for communicating risk change effectively
- Make your
information 'credible'
Control
This section covers how to stay on track, how to tell if we
are not, and what to do when we deviate.
- Discover
the full potential and purpose of control systems
- Identify
which project elements warrant tracking and control
- Explore the
keys to choosing control techniques
- Structure
your control system for decision making and project acceptance
- Keep unnecessary
change in check
- Design a
change control mechanism
- Deal with
performance gaps
- Take corrective
action - 10 possible strategies
- Determine
how much control is too much
Managing
Conflict
Conflict makes many of us uncomfortable and few of us deal with
it in a way that creates renewed commitment
- Survey conflict
to see if it is productive or destructive
- Overview
the stages, manifestations, roots and strategies for addressing
conflict
- Get tips
and tricks for dealing with specific conflict situations
Communication
Miscommunication is often blamed for the problems we experience
in projects. Learn project specific communication solutions.
- Get the right
information for managing
- Compare the
formal (written) and informal (verbal) output needs
- Refine standard
status reports to meet your project's needs
- Compensate
for what reports can't tell you
- Communicate
strategically
Organizational
Structures
The context within which we operate has an impact on how easy
it is to get things done, who is responsible for what, and where
to turn for help.
- Appreciate
the differences between the three principal organizational structures
- Review the
typical breakdown of project responsibility in a matrix organization
- Consider
the project approval process in your organization
- Gain insight
into the function and composition of steering committees
- Perform a
stakeholder analysis
- Go through
your own project leadership profile
- Dissect the
project manager's role
